Who We Are
MiscSoftware started back in 2003 as a simple software download directory. The internet looked very different then — finding reliable software meant sifting through sketchy download sites and trusting whatever the box said on the shelf at Best Buy. We figured there had to be a better way.
Over the years, we’ve evolved from a download catalog into a full-fledged independent review site. The download directories faded away (good riddance, honestly), but the need for straight-talking software guidance only grew. Today, we cover productivity tools, creative software, security solutions, business platforms, and everything in between.
Our Mission
We’re here to help you pick the right software without wading through marketing fluff. Every vendor claims they’re the best. Every landing page is optimized to get you to click “Buy Now.” We cut through that noise.
Our goal is simple: give you the honest information you need to make a smart decision. Whether you’re a freelancer looking for invoicing software or an IT manager evaluating security tools for a 500-person company, we want you to walk away from our site feeling confident about your choice.
How We Review Software
We don’t do drive-by reviews. Every product we cover gets hands-on testing in real-world scenarios. That means actually using the software — not just reading the feature list and rephrasing it.
Here’s what our review process looks like:
- Hands-on testing: We install, configure, and use every product ourselves. We test core features, edge cases, and the stuff vendors don’t like to talk about (like how cancellation works).
- Real-world scenarios: We evaluate software the way actual users would. If it’s a project management tool, we run a real project through it. If it’s a VPN, we test speeds across multiple servers and locations.
- Comparison context: No software exists in a vacuum. We always consider how a product stacks up against its main competitors.
- Regular updates: Software changes fast. We revisit our reviews and re-test products to make sure our recommendations stay current.
The Team
Our editors have 20+ years of combined experience in software, IT, and product management. We’ve been on both sides of the table — building products and choosing them — which gives us a practical perspective that pure tech journalists sometimes miss.
We’re a small, focused team, and that’s intentional. It means every review carries the weight of our collective reputation. There’s no junior writer churning out content they don’t understand. If someone on our team reviews a product, they’ve genuinely used it.
Why Trust Us
Trust is earned, and we know that. Here’s what sets us apart:
- Independence: We don’t accept paid reviews or sponsored placements. Period. No vendor can pay to get a better score or a more prominent position on our site.
- No pay-for-play: Our recommendations are based on testing and merit. If a product is great, we’ll say so. If it’s not, we’ll say that too — even if the vendor is a household name.
- Transparent methodology: We publish our editorial policy so you can see exactly how we evaluate software. No black boxes.
- Affiliate disclosure: Yes, we use affiliate links to keep the lights on. But they never influence our ratings or recommendations. We disclose these relationships clearly, and you can read more in our editorial policy.
We’ve been doing this for over two decades. In an industry full of sites that popped up last year to chase affiliate revenue, that longevity means something. We’re not going anywhere, and our reputation matters more to us than any single commission check.
